Reflections, Priorities, and the Power of Perspective — Day 4

As I continue documenting this journey, I’ve realized how much writing has challenged me to reflect in ways I hadn’t expected. Today, I want to emphasize something crucial. While I’m excited about AI/ML, my true focus remains on cybersecurity. Threat intelligence is my foundation, and I’m learning how to integrate AI/ML into my workflows rather than pursuing it as an isolated focus.

The Weight of Pressure

This journey has illuminated a monster I’ve been grappling with: pressure. The urgency I feel in cybersecurity is almost constant, and the well-known imposter syndrome looms large. I often hear how SANS training feels like being sprayed with a water hose, but for me, nearly every new concept in this field feels that way, a daily deluge of information.

Despite this, I love the industry. I know there are many aspiring professionals trying to enter this field, and I’m grateful for how far I’ve come. Yet, it’s easy to undersell myself. One thing I hold onto is the power to learn and grow, that’s always within my control.

If You’re Anything Like Me…

There’s a thought I’ve been reflecting on deeply: What if this is the moment to level the playing field? AI/ML has the potential to make certain jobs obsolete, but it also creates opportunities for growth and innovation. This could be a chance for the passionate and hungry to evolve, to rise to the occasion.

I don’t have all the answers, no one does, not even AI. But if you’re anything like me, you’re thankful for the help. Whether it’s from a mentor, a tool, or even an AI assistant, having something or someone to ask for guidance is invaluable. It’s this collaboration that empowers us to tackle challenges and keep moving forward.

Refocusing on Threat Intelligence

With further reflection, I’m more certain than ever that threat intelligence needs to be my primary focus. Threat hunting and perhaps even bug bounties will complement this direction. Articles like “The AI Security Challenge” reinforce the complexity of integrating AI into security workflows. As the article notes, “AI has the power to enhance threat detection but also creates new attack vectors that challenge traditional defenses.” This duality intrigues me and pushes me to hone my skills.

Adapting and Upskilling

Rather than rushing into a project, I’ve decided to focus on upskilling over the next three months. I’ll use AI tools to refine my abilities and explore language models to support threat hunting and reporting. As I grow, I’ll keep track of my overall vision, allowing a more cohesive project to emerge naturally.

The article “Streamlining Threat Detection: A Guide to Using Security Onion” highlights the importance of effective triage and case creation. Tools like Security Onion and AI-driven platforms can help streamline workflows, giving me the bandwidth to focus on higher-priority tasks.

A Balancing Act

I’ve also been reflecting on the role of AI in leveling the playing field. It’s not about replacing humans but amplifying their capabilities. As highlighted in “Cybersecurity in APAC: AI and Quantum,” “AI’s potential lies in its ability to empower professionals to address complex challenges with efficiency.” I want to embody this mindset, seeing AI as a collaborator rather than a competitor.

A Call to Action

As I move forward, I’m reminded of the importance of transparency and growth. This journey isn’t just for me; it’s for anyone navigating these complex and rapidly evolving fields. I don’t have all the answers, and I’m okay with that. What matters is the willingness to learn and adapt.

Let me leave you with a question: How do you think security professionals should approach AI?

I’d love to hear your thoughts as I continue building this vision and sharing my reflections. Here’s to evolving together, one step at a time.
