DeepSeek, Red Teaming, and Balancing Workload — Day 27

The Hype Around DeepSeek

The hype surrounding DeepSeek has definitely reached new levels. Even people in my personal life have been reaching out to ask about it. Some seem rather paranoid, questioning whether the tool can truly be trusted. While it’s understandable, many are pointing out that you can’t trust DeepSeek any more or less than the other AI tools currently available.

I came across a thought-provoking article discussing whether DeepSeek poses a significant security threat (Kelly Lee Reeves on Medium). The conversation around trust and security is growing, and it’s clear that while tools like DeepSeek can be groundbreaking, they also raise important questions about risk management and responsible use.

A Practical Perspective with OWASP’s GenAI Red Teaming Guide

Today, I checked out the GenAI Red Teaming Guide from OWASP (link), and it was a breath of fresh air. Unlike much of the media I’ve consumed about AI, which often veers into the fantastical, this guide offered a practical approach to understanding and using AI. It frames AI strictly as a tool, something to be understood, utilized, and kept in its place.

It makes sense that a red team perspective would take this kind of pragmatic approach. Maybe it’s my own bias or ignorance, but it seems like AI could also be a great way to break into fields you’re curious about. For instance, using AI to explore identity security concepts can provide new insights, as highlighted in an article on the future of identity security (SC World).

Exploring SOAR with Shuffle

I spent some time exploring Shuffle today while searching for a SOAR tool I could quickly start using for learning and experimentation. While I didn’t dive too deeply into it, I see the value of having accessible tools to test ideas and satisfy my curiosity. As I continue my training, I’ll need to balance hands-on experimentation with theoretical learning to solidify my understanding of automation and orchestration.

Balancing Work and Personal Projects

This past week, my workload has noticeably increased. As a result, I haven’t been able to dedicate as much time to my personal projects as I’d like. Still, I’ve made it a point to post daily and stay engaged with what I’m learning. Consistency matters, and even when progress feels slower, every step forward counts.

For now, I’ll focus on maintaining that balance, ensuring I’m still moving toward my larger goals while managing the demands of my current workload.
